Castles in Wales

Visit some of Wales' Enchanting Castles

Wales is one of the worlds greatest countries for castles and we have some stunning examples on our doorstep at Safe Haven Lodges.

Raglan Castle

The unmistakable silhouette of Raglan crowning a ridge amid glorious countryside is the grandest castle ever built by Welshmen.

We can thank Sir William ap Thomas, the ‘blue knight of Gwent’, for the moated Great Tower of 1435 that still dominates this mighty fortress-palace. His son Sir William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke, created the gatehouse with its flared ‘machicolations’.

Caerphilly Castle

The largest castle in Wales, and the second-largest in Britain, Caerphilly Castle was locked within water defences when it was built by the English during the 13th century. The outside is the place, among an array of delights, to see four siege engines, and the inside has a hallowed, majestic feel.

Castle Coch

Castell Coch, or the ‘Red Castle’, rises up from the ancient beech woods of Fforest Fawr like a vision from a fairytale. Yet these great towers with their unmistakable conical roofs only hint at the splendour within.
